The Alzheimer disease is associated with aging

There is no other disease that could fall into the category of age-related conditions easier than Alzheimer disease does. Let’s face it, the aging process is difficult and it comes with a lot of health problems.

Both physical and mental. However, out of these, the mental ones are those who pose the most serious impact on the individual’s functioning as a whole. The brain is the organ that controls the entire organism and it is also the one responsible for the social functioning of the individual itself.

As the time passes, there are a lot of diseases that the brain becomes susceptible to, some avoidable, some not. Alzheimer disease is one of them and it is known as the old man’s disease.

The Alzheimer disease is a form of dementia and it does not develop as a natural occurrence of the aging process, despite its spread among the senior population. Also, it is a progressive disease, which tends to aggravate over time and whose symptoms worsen as the subject advances in age.

The Alzheimer disease is particularly feared due to its mechanisms. It affects the learning process and short term memory. People who have developed it will have problems remembering newly assimilated information, for instance, and this will impact their daily functioning more and more as the keep aging.

The Alzheimer disease and the treatment

This affection has no known cure. However, there are a lot of ways to fight against the symptoms and allow the patient to live a normal life altogether. Or as close as possible to it.

The problem is that, despite the treatment methods, there is no way to either prevent or even delay the progress of the Alzheimer disease. All that we can do is to keep the symptoms under control. In this regard, there are 5 drugs that have proven somewhat efficient in controlling the manifestation of the affection, at least in some part:

  • Tacrine
  • Rivastigmine
  • Galantamine
  • Donepezil
  • Memantine

The first 4 are acetylcholinesterase inhibitors and the last one is NMDA receptor antagonist and neither of them is too effective, but it is all we have at the moment.

Aside from this, the patients often go through psychosocial treatments, including cognitive and behavior stimulation. Unfortunately, their effectiveness has not been yet properly investigated so there is no way of telling how much they really help.

Is there any prevention technique?

Unfortunately, there is not enough evidence regarding any relevant preventive measure against the Alzheimer’s disease. According to specialists, the affection cannot be successfully prevented by any particular method, but there are ways to lower the risk of developing it considerably. In this regard we have to mention:

  • Constant mental and intellectual stimulation
  • Eating healthier meals, much like those consumed my Asians, mainly low in saturated fats and simple carbohydrates

Now, aside from these, there is another prevention method that has been proven to reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer disease over time and this is a sauna. According to the latest findings, men, in particular, have a lower risk of getting this condition if they attend to regular sauna sessions. But how exactly does this work?

It seems like going to the sauna is not relevant in itself, but becomes with increased frequency. Meaning that regular and often sessions count infinitely more than when rare. Also, the tests were not aimed at finding a connection between sauna frequency and the Alzheimer disease but were more focused on analyzing the impact of dementia in general.

According to the scientists, it has been noticed that men who went to sauna several times a week at least, manifested lower risk of contracting dementia and related cognitive affections. Although the results were amazingly compelling, there is still much research needed to be done until the final conclusions will be adopted.
