Lactobacillus Paracasei – removes the harm caused by atopic dermatitis

Lactobacillus Paracasei is a species of the lactic acid bacteria and it is gram-positive. These bacteria are used in dairy products to as fermentation agents and probiotics. Till date, thirty-four strains of Lactobacillus Paracasei have been found out that have been isolated from different kinds of environments.

Lactobacillus Paracasei is a rod-shaped bacterium that has a length of 0.8- 1.0µm and its breadth is 2.0- 4.0 µm. 16 of the strains were found by isolating them from dairy products, 8 from human and animals’ GI tract and 10 from plants.

Lactobacillus Paracasei has properties of fermentation that makes it useful for making supplements and biological food processors treat medical disorders and for diets. Lactobacillus Paracasei and the other members of its genus and not distinguishable phenotypically but its fermentation profile distinguishes it.

The cells of Lactobacillus Paracasei have square ends and they can exist in the form of chains or in a single form.

The optimum temperature for Lactobacillus Paracasei to grow ranges between 10° C to 37° C.  Above 40° C, the growth of these bacteria does not take place. However, it can survive at the highest temperature of 72° C for 40 seconds at most.

Lactobacillus Paracasei is found naturally in the GI tract of human beings and animals as they exist as a common inhabitant. They are found in sources which are naturally fermented like vegetables, meat, and milk. Pickled vegetables like Kim chi contain Lactobacillus Paracasei. They are found in dairy products like yogurt.

They are also found in several kinds of supplements that contain Lactobacillus Paracasei cultures. This disease is a chronic disease. It has been found out that in the last 30 years, atopic dermatitis has increased rapidly, the cause of it being industrialization. There have been many attempts to treat this condition; one of them is Lactobacillus Paracasei bacteria.

What is Atopic Dermatitis?

Atopic dermatitis is a disease that affects infants or young children. It causes inflammation of the skin that results in a red, cracked and swollen skin and imparts an itchy feeling. This condition starts in the childhood but its severity can change later.

For babies under the age of one year, the whole body may be affected. Also for older people, areas like the inside crease of the elbow, back of the knees are commonly affected. For adults, the feet and hands are the most affected areas. Men and women are equally affected by atopic dermatitis, however, it is more commonly seen to affect children.

Some common symptoms of atopic dermatitis are scaly and dry skin which affects the whole body and causes red and itchy lesions that affect the back of the knees or the inner crease of the elbows, face and the neck.

How does Lactobacillus Paracasei help in reducing the harm caused by atopic dermatitis?

Lactobacillus Paracasei is known to have an effect on allergic conditions such as atopic dermatitis on many levels. They compete with pathogens with the ability to adhere to mucous and intestinal epithelium for limited loci.

In the digestive system, Lactobacillus Paracasei inhibits the mucosal and epithelial adherence of pathogens and that prevents the pathogens from invading through the epithelium.

It has several antibacterial properties that release hydrogen peroxide and other organic acids which decrease the growth of pathogens that cause atopic dermatitis. Probiotics such as Lactobacillus Paracasei, increase the antibody creation in the body and it also enhances the activities of phagocytes.

These alter and modify the structure of the allergens and thus, prevent the spreading of the allergic disease. They alleviate their immunogenicity.

A study was conducted by researchers on atopic dermatitis patients. A double- blind placebo controlled study was also conducted. Another double- blind, placebo- controlled test was conducted on 230 infants who suffered from atopic dermatitis or atopic eczema syndrome.

All the tests found results that suggest that Lactobacillus Paracasei decreases the SCORAD index, IL-6, IFN-γ, serum IL-5 and the total serum IgE levels of the atopic dermatitis patients. The conclusion that can be drawn from the study, experiments and tests are that these bacteria reduce the modification of the potential allergens that cause atopic dermatitis.

Atopic dermatitis is a disease that has a tendency to produce IgE antibodies as a response to low dose allergens as that causes the typical symptoms of Atopic dermatitis, asthma, and rhinoconjunctivitis.  Thus, Lactobacillus Paracasei decreases the IgE production levels and that helps in inhibiting the cause of the symptoms of the disease.

Several benefits of Lactobacillus Paracasei

Lactobacillus Paracasei is a probiotic bacterium whose properties help in the treatment of medical diseases.

  • It boosts the immunity system and increases energy levels.
  • It helps in fighting infections like atopic dermatitis.
  • It helps in maintaining the acidic balance in the digestive system.
  • It decreases the growth of potential allergens that can cause atopic dermatitis.
  • It enhances the activities of the intestines.
  • A constituent of the nutritional treatment called VSL#3 is Lactobacillus Paracasei. It is a standardized, proprietary formulation of living bacteria. This treatment is used in conventional therapies that treat ulcerative colitis.
  • They are highly effective in restoring the mucosal barrier function in the intestines; they help in degrading antigens of food. They are known to regulate the activities and microbial composition of the intestinal system. They also increase the production of IgA secretion. Lactobacillus Paracasei stimulates Th1 response and blocks the The2 allergic response.
