Is narcolepsy the most dangerous among the sleeping disorder?
Narcolepsy: Among the most known sleeping disorder, narcolepsy is the one that could make insomniacs envious. The affection is characterized by the fact that you will randomly fall asleep, even without acknowledging it.

In this case, the sleeping disorder coming as a direct result of narcolepsy lack the muscular affections and the danger of paralysis. In exchange, the symptoms are restricted to constant excessive sleepiness and lack of energy. Even after resting apparently well enough, the feeling of being tired will persist throughout the day, immediately after waking up.
But here is an interesting fact, making cataplexy one of the most irritating sleeping disorder. Although it may seem like it, those who are suffering from cataplexy do not have more sleeping hours than regular people. The only exception is that, instead of sleeping during the night, they tend to sleep during the day. The nighttime sleeping sessions are often interrupted and the body will tend to recover during the day.
Narcolepsy is the most dangerous sleeping disorder
When you refer to sleeping disorder, you do not tend to think of them as something particularly dangerous, but this is not the case with narcolepsy. And the most dangers come from its symptoms, which include primarily daytime sleepiness and hallucinations, but also as a direct result of cataplexy. Among the most conclusive problems we mention:
- Memory problems
Not being able to get enough sleep could take a toll on our functioning throughout the day. In this regard, we may experience memory problems, which can make us ineffective when handling the daily tasks.
- Random and sudden sleeping
Most of those suffering from this sleeping disorder will fall asleep in random places, without any prior warning. This could place them in dangerous situations, especially when combined with severe hallucinations as a plus.
- Low levels of energy
Feeling drained and used is common among those who experience narcolepsy, again, a direct result of not being able to get enough rest.
Can it be treated?
It can be treated in the sense that there are ways to soften the symptoms. But the disease cannot be cured. Also, treating this sleeping disorder is a bit difficult, because the methods are not universal, but instead related to each individual, in particular, depending on the symptoms and his therapeutic response.
In this regard, the actual treatment involves nervous stimulants like modafinil and amphetamine, but also the use of serotonin inhibitors, aka clomipramine or protriptyline.
But there are also lifestyle changes to be taken into account, like adopting a healthier exercising program, an adequate diet and stress managing techniques. These will aid in increasing the daytime alertness, but also in promoting an easier sleeping pattern during nights.
