The new findings by the researchers from the University of Florida in Gainesville showed that the amount of time one can maintain weight loss is not very encouraging. Kathryn Ross, an assistant professor at the University of Florida College of Public Health and Health Professions theorized that after an individual experience a significant weight loss, there is usually a “limbo” period of weight loss maintenance before the individual will start gaining weight again.
A Lot of People Cannot Maintain Weight Loss
According to the studies released by Ross and his teams, most people that experience a significant weight loss will add between one third and one half of the weight they lost within a year of achieving that feat.
However, most people are more interested in knowing how long it takes to start regaining weight. Ross and his team believed that there is a “period of grace” before one can start gaining his weight back. Nonetheless, there is a new research that proved this assumption still needs some work.
Ross and his team worked with 75 participants who completed a twelve-week, Internet-based weight loss program. These participants lost 12.7 pounds during this period with the help of this program. After achieving this feat, the participants were asked to go home and continue to weigh themselves every day over a period of 9 months. Their results were remotely relayed back to Ross team through a wireless network.
The research team observed that most of the participants started experiencing weight gain approximately 77 days from the beginning of the study, gaining approximately 0.15 pounds every week. However, their weight regains rate slowed down after approximately 222 days from the start of the program, during this period, the participants only put on about 0.13 pounds each week.
At the end, the researchers based their final analysis on the results of 70 participants out of the 75 that took part in the study. The results of 5 participants were disregarded because they were incomplete.
Why Do We Regain Weight, How Can We Avoid It?
Through multiple studies, the researchers have been able to know exactly the riskiest periods of weight regain. Thus, they are building strategies for prevention as well as weight loss maintenance.
According to the above study, there is no exact explanation to why the participants start regaining weight so soon after losing weight initially. However, the researchers believed that their social environment and temptations that come with it such as the urge to indulge in unhealthful eating habits may have something to do with it.
According to them, we are always surrounded by foods that are high in calories, fat, sugar, and more. Moreover, it is hard for these individuals to build activity into their day. What this means is that most people that were able to lose a significant amount of weight were so satisfied with their progress that they caved into the same temptations that led to them being an unhealthy weight in the first place.
The researchers offer some encouragement. According to them, there is no hard and fast rule to weight regain. There are a good number of dieters who were able not to add extra weight after losing it initially.
Ross encouraged those interested in maintaining the weight they lost to weigh themselves daily in order to see how the changes they are making in their daily activities are impacting their weight. She encouraged them to look for trends in their weight maintenance journey.
